Pros and Cons: Juice Beauty SPF 30 Oil free Moisturizer

8 Pros of Juice Beauty SPF 30 Oil Free Moisturizer

  1. Provides broad spectrum and high protection for UV rays.
  2. Ingredients are clean and safe – a plus for those who are health conscious, as its ingredients are either USDA-certified organic or plant derived.
  3. Great for sensitive skin – Its main sunscreen ingredient is zinc oxide which is known to be well tolerated.
  4. Zinc oxide is photostable – it will not break down into toxic substances under exposure to UV rays.
  5. Less likely to cause skin irritation than other sunscreen ingredients.
  6. Doesn’t penetrate intact skin – less likely to cause skin irritation.
  7. Good for acne-prone skin.
  8. Can be applied on children (Zinc Oxide as a sunscreen ingredient is recommended for children unlike organic sunscreen ingredients). However, for children less than 6 months, consult your doctor.

4 Cons of Juice Beauty SPF 30 Oil Free Moisturizer

  1. Doesn’t glide onto the skin – consistency leans more on the thicker side, making it harder to apply.
  2. Leaves a white cast – this is primarily due to the nature of zinc oxide (however, recent technology uses zinc-coated nanoparticles to reduce the problem of agglomeration).
  3. Not great for tanned skin – white cast becomes more obvious on darker skin.
  4. May cause skin irritation if you rub too hard during application process. You may need a serum or mix with another moisturizer if you have acne – for easier application.

My Verdict – the winner sunscreen!

The WINNER sunscreen product for me on this occasion is Juice Beauty SPF 30 Oil free Moisturizer.

I have chosen Juice Beauty SPF 30 Oil free Moisturizer over Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40 because its safety profile which is a deal breaker for me. Also, It is better tolerated, making it more ideal for children due to zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is photostable, doesn’t penetrate intact skin and less likely to cause irritation or allergy.

However, if you compare on other points like versatility of use (e.g. as a primer for makeup), gliding ability, use without being noticed on the skin (i.e. no cast left) etc., then your go to will be the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40.

On Pricing and protection against UVA & UVB (i.e. both have broad spectrum protection), they both compare very well.

11 Sunscreen Tips

1) Think UV, not heat – sunscreen is recommended when UV index is 3 or greater even on not so sunny days.

2) Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen product – protects against both UVA and UVB

3) Apply generously to optimize protection as claimed by the product.

4) Apply sunscreen to EVERY part EXPOSED to sun including those areas that you can easily miss – your ears, back of your neck, your exposed scalp/hair line, your feet and behind your knees

5) Apply sunscreen 15 – 20 minutes before heading out and reapply every 1 – 2 hours or according to manufacturer’s direction.

6) Limit time spent in sun – sunscreen doesn’t give you leverage to spend unlimited time in sun.

7) Sunscreen is not a replacement for wearing clothes. Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses too.

8) Sunscreen being water resistant means it doesn’t wash off during swimming as long as you don’t wipe it off. It doesn’t mean waterproof. It will eventually wash off – so note how long (e.g. 2, 3 or 4 hours) your sunscreen can remain water resistant for. However, good and safe practice is to reapply sunscreen every 1- 2 hours or according to manufacturer’s direction.

9) Reapply sunscreen after swimming, profuse sweating and wiping with towel.

10) Naturally occurring mineral-based sunscreens such as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Oxide are generally recommended for children unlike chemically formulated “organic” sunscreens such as avobenzone, oxybenzone or derivatives of salicylate and cinnamic acid.

In this case, organic doesn’t mean it’s naturally grown. It refers to their compounds being made of carbon and hydrogen bond

11) Consult your doctor for children less than 6 months before applying any sunscreen.

Note: In Australia, the slogan for protection against UV ray is slip, slop, slap – Slip a shirt on, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat.

  1. I agree that supergoop is probably overhyped and absolutely 100% not compatible with sensitive dry skin like mine!! Would love to hear your review on La Roche Posay face sunscreen spf50! It works so well for me and definitely worth to dig in.

    • Hi N Sahar, thanks for your honest review of Supergoop! I’m sorry to hear it doesn’t work well with sensitive skin and you haven’t had a good experience.

Also, thank you for your suggestion, we’ll sure do a detailed review on La Roche Posay face sunscreen spf50. We are always eager to hear about products that’ll be better for our readers.

In the meantime, another sunscreen that could give you a bang for your buck is La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 60 (https://skincareoss.com/Amazon-LaRochePosay). From anecdotal reviews, this sunscreen which is oil free is suitable for the face, people with sensitive skin and acne prone skin, as it won’t won’t cause breakouts. It’s also non-greasy and Oxybenzone free – which is safe for our coral reef, among other several perks!
